The doppelgängers are alarming because they look like the characters we have gotten to know. Us did an excellent job of introducing the family in a way that warmed you to them and this made the cautious introduction of the tethered all the more chilling.
The fact that it is not immediately clear what the doppelgängers planned to do was beneficial for viewer suspense but did slightly muddle the enemy, for example, when the doppelgängers for the * * family appeared they simply immediately murdered everyone and it was not clear why Red and her squad didn’t also do this. I would argue it’s because Red was different from the other tethers but, not her children or husband?
The ambition of the doppelgängers is where points are lost here, the entire plan was wildly dense and and difficult to make sense of. If it was as simple as killing their above world tethers before joining hands across America, why did Red’s family stand with joint hands for so long before even entering the house? Well, for creepiness points of course, but I was a little confused by what their hopes and plans long term were.
