you will beg for mercy… As I feast on your heart…
Christmas movie released in Spring, the lacklustre villains could not have stood without the heroes.
Dr Sivana considered himself worthy of the wizards power from a young age but was pulled in by the whispers of the seven deadly sins and thus lost his chance. Later in life he continued to feel that he did deserve a chance but was confused in his execution, I would have enjoyed this villain more if this character arc had been explored, i.e. he attempted to be honourable to prove his worth. Even the scene when he met the wizard again would have benefited from him asking once more to be considered worthy, and with yet another rejection saw him spiralling confused.
We were taught a lot about Dr Sivana’s background and his struggles with his father and brother, but interestingly their observations of him were mostly true and that created too much of a pathetic character who struggled to see his own weaknesses. He avoided acknowledgement of the fact he couldn’t resist the deadly sins and acknowledgment of the fact his behaviour in the car was dangerous. Even in his final scene with the wizard he chose the ball of evil power instead despite claiming to be worthy.
I will admit however, that Dr Sivana’s serious demeanour supported the movie Shazam! well as it balanced with the comedy of it well, also, his voice was passably villainous.
DR SIVANA GETS: ★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ (3/10)
7 DEADLY SINS: ★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ (2/10)
The Seven Deadly sins, where to begin, it wasn’t clear which dusty form represented which sin so they grouped together as just, the bad goblin tentical types rather than the viewer feeling reminded of what exactly they were.
Their abilities were muddled, in the meeting room it was clear they were extremely capable killers but during the fairground scenes at the end of the movie any moment they were on-screen displayed them just, sort of, faffing about.
These guys would have benefited from a few more character related monologues, slightly better symbolism in regard to their origin and. Look, if Dr Sivana is the serious villain in this movie, the seven deadly sins could have been embraced. Gluttony didn’t shout *feed me* even once, sloth didn’t reply *do I have to* nor greed with *I will have them all*. What a wasted opportunity.
